Conservation urged in water systems

PORT ANGELES — A request for voluntary water conservation affects 2.379 households using the Fairview, Evergreen, Carlsborg and Panoramic Heights water systems.

The Clallam County Public Utility District announced a Stage 2 water alert for these systems Friday.

Stage 3 of the Drought Response Plan would limit outdoor watering. Stage 4 would eliminate outdoor watering and limit indoor use.

Island View Water System is in Stage 3, Clallam Bay/Sekiu Water System is in Stage 2.

Water conservation alerts have not been issued for the Gales Addition, Mount Angeles or Monroe Water Systems. These systems rely on purchased water from the City of Port Angeles, which has not issued any conservation alerts for the year at the time of this release.

Last week, Gov. Jay Inslee declared a statewide drought emergency citing low snowpack and low river flows.

The objective of the Stage 2 plan is to encourage customers to conserve and prepare customers for additional drought response measures later in the season.

Some ways customers can reduce their water consumption include cutting outdoor water use; fixing leaky faucets and toilets; taking shorter showers instead of baths; installing low-flow shower heads and faucets; operating automatic dish and clothes washers only when full and reusing household water such as the water that runs form the faucet while awaiting hot water, which can be used to water plants.
