Prominent Clallam County civic, business and political leaders will spend their Saturday bagging groceries in Port Angeles and Sequim.
The event is a halfway marker for the United Way of Clallam County’s annual fund drive.
The event will be Saturday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at supermarkets and stores in Port Angeles and Sequim, said Jody Moss, United Way executive director.
In Port Angeles, the celebrity baggers will be stationed at both Safeway stores, Albertsons, Swain’s General Store, and Saar’s Market Place Foods.
In Sequim and Carlsborg, participating stores are Safeway, QFC, and Sunny Farms.
“This is a way to highlight the middle of the campaign and at the same time bring some fun into the process,” Moss said.
“This year in Port Angeles, [Fire Chief] Dan McKeen is organizing the group and so there will be a lot of people from law enforcement and city individuals.”
In Forks, the bagging event will take place Nov. 7, because of conflicts with other events.
It will run from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Forks Outfitters.
The campaign goal for the year is $1.1 million.
So far the campaign has raised about $140,000, Moss said.
“This is really close to where we were last year,” she said.
“But on the other hand, it is really hard to judge by that because different businesses do their campaigns at different times.
“We have heard from some that they are having a really difficult time raising funds — but on the other hand we have a lot more smaller businesses this year who are contributing and a few individuals here and there that have increased their support because they know the need.”
Through March 31
Moss said most of the campaign is usually complete by Nov. 15, but that donations for the fiscal year will be accepted through March 31.
Moss said the bagging is a “really fun event.”
“None of us are particularly good at bagging groceries,” she said, “so hopefully people are patient with us.
“A lot of people get a real kick out of it.”
