Community groups collaborate on student scholarship

PORT ANGELES — The Albert Haller Foundation has received a $30,000 donation from Lakeside Industries of Port Angeles where part of the money will be used to present a yearly George F. Peabody Scholarship to a graduating high school senior in Clallam County.

The donation was presented to the Albert Haller Foundation board in Sequim on May 22.

The Albert Haller Foundation was formed in 1992 as a nonprofit to carry out Albert Haller’s value of education and community.

Who’s part of it

The foundation is managed by a board of five volunteer directors including foundation President Gary Smith, Vice President Dick Schneider, Secretary/Treasurer Dave Blake, Sequim School District Superintendent Gary Neal and Port Angeles School District Superintendent Marc Jackson.

Lakeside Industries in collaboration with the Albert Haller Foundation will give a portion of this donation to Wesley Duncan, a Port Angeles High School graduating senior, who will receive $1,500 through the George F. Peabody Scholarship.

Jackson said Duncan’s teacher Dan Helpenstell recommended him for the scholarship because he learns new skills quickly, is a positive role model for students and has a good work ethic.

The scholarship will be sent to Wenatchee Valley College, where Duncan plans to attend advanced auto mechanics for the 2017-18 school year.

As stated in the foundation’s mission statement, it specifically donates its income to young men and women pursuing a post-high school education, charitable organizations and capital projects in Clallam County.
