PORT ANGELES — Mayor Gary Braun has appointed three City Council members to a committee to consider options for filling the city manager position Mark Madsen has resigned.
Madsen announced his resignation from the Port Angeles city manager position — which he has held since October 2005 — effective no later than Sept. 1, on Wednesday.
The committee is made up of Braun, Councilman Dan DiGuilio, who was elected in November, and Councilwoman Karen Rogers, former mayor.
The group will meet within the next two weeks, Braun said Thursday.
“Believe me, we are not standing still,” he said.
In his resignation letter, Madsen said he quit his $148,000 a year job overseeing about 350 employees because of a rift in the City Council that caused a “hostile work environment.”
He didn’t name council members in his letter, and declined further comment on Wednesday and Thursday.
Said Braun Thursday: “We need to move forward.
“He has turned in his resignation, and if that doesn’t change, we have to take a lot of things into consideration, such as an interim city manager and that sort of thing.
“We assure the staff that the council is behind them 100 percent.”
Braun did not know how the committee will proceed or when it will meet.
The three members do not create a quorum of the seven-member council, so the meetings do not have to be public.
