PORT TOWNSEND — The public can now comment on two proposed roundabouts along state Highway 20 approaching the state ferries terminal in Port Townsend.
The roundabouts would replace signal systems at the intersections of Highway 20 and Discovery Road (Mill Road) and Kearney Street in Port Townsend.
The state Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has created an online open house for people to learn about the roundabouts and provide comments. Comments on the proposal will be accepted until noon Nov. 2.
The existing signals have reached the end of their useful life, and a new intersection control is necessary to keep traffic moving, WSDOT stated in a press release.
After evaluating the intersections, WSDOT traffic engineers recommended compact roundabouts for improved mobility and safety for all travelers and motorists, as well as reduced maintenance costs.
Comments will be accepted by email, phone or letter to Debbie Clemen with WSDOT’s Olympic Region Multimodal Planning office. Her email is debbie.clemen@wsdot.wa.gov. Letters can be sent to P.O. Box 47440, Olympia, WA 98504-7440, or people can call 360-704-3204.
The online open house is at tinyurl.com/PTroundabouts. To read about planning studies on the intersections, click on tinyurl.com/PTplanningstudies.
