PORT ANGELES — The greatest show on turf?
If Wednesday’s performance against Everett Community College is a sign of things to come for the Peninsula College men’s soccer team, the Pirates are appointment viewing at the very least.
The Pirates unleashed an offensive onslaught in their first divisional game at Sigmar Field, romping to a 7-0 win on their brand new artificial turf surface.
Peninsula has now won eight straight to begin the season — counting an alumni game triumph two weeks ago — and has outscored opponents 34-4 during that time.
“Our team plays so quick and their touches are so good that this field really helps,” Pirate men’s coach Andrew Chapman said.
“It’s a good-sized field for us, there’s a lot of space for us to utilize, so it’s working well.”
It didn’t take long for the Pirates (2-0-0 in West Division, 8-0-0 overall) to get on the scoreboard Wednesday, with Omar Ambrocio, Sergio Oliveira and Miguel Gonzalez all netting goals in the first 13 minutes.
Miguel Gonzalez assisted on the very first score from Ambrocio in the fifth minute. Then Miguel’s brother, Daniel, dealt out scoring passes on the next two to Oliveira and Miguel for a quick 3-0 lead.
The rout was on early in the second half after the Pirates added three goals in the first seven minutes.
That included two scores from Dean Gaynor and one from Miguel Gonzalez. Port Angeles High School graduate Dustin Walsh assisted on two of those scores.
“They played well. Anytime you knock in seven goals you’re doing something right,” Chapman said.
“They are not getting complacent yet, so that’s good. They are serious and they wanted it and they came out fired up.”
The Pirates dominated possession of the ball throughout, out-shooting the Trojans 29-4 on the game.
Jared Wilson recorded his third shutout of the season in goal.

PORT ANGELES — The Pirates knocked off the third-ranked Trojans behind a solid defensive performance Wednesday.
Aubrey Briscoe scored a goal in the final minute of the first half, and Jackie Rodgers added another in the 71st minute to boost the Pirates to their second shutout victory in three matches.
Krystal Daniels recorded the shutout in goal.
The Pirate women and men resume play at Sigmar Field on Saturday when they host Shoreline at noon and 2 p.m., respectively.
