Events led by Washington State University at Port Angeles and Port Townsend high schools will help students envision life in college.
The program, Imagine U @ College, will be conducted Monday in Port Angeles and Tuesday in Port Townsend.
It will run for the first three class periods of the day for students and include a session with parents at night.
The Port Angeles parents night will be at 6 p.m. at Port Angeles High School, 304 E. Park Ave.
At the Port Townsend event, which will be at 7 p.m. at the Port Townsend High School gym, 450 Fir St., parents from Chimacum High School also are invited.
During the day, students will learn about college life from Washington State University staff members.
“High school teachers are hosting WSU staff those periods, so our students will get a chance to experience a university-level class and see what it’s really like to be in a college classroom,” said Mike Nolan, Port Angeles High School counselor.
Captivating classes
“The classes are captivating and varied, with such titles as ‘Aliens in Your Backyard,’ which is taught by a field scientist who specializes in weeds, and ‘Chocolate, Kimchi and Cheese: Fermented Foods as Art,’ in which a food scientist explores the history of fermented foods.
“I think this will be a fun, eye-opening experience for our students.”
In the evenings, parents will hear a recap of the student sessions and get their questions answered, Nolan said, adding that a panel will include college students.
“Again, extremely useful information for our four-year-college-bound students, presented by people who are ‘in the know,’” Nolan said.
“And the information will not be specific to WSU — the presentations cover college preparation in general — so it should be useful to our students wherever they plan to apply.”
The Port Angeles High School evening event will include a free pasta dinner for the first 150 people in attendance, Nolan said
The Port Townsend High School event will be a dessert social.
