ALLYN — The Coast Guard suspended a search Wednesday afternoon for a kayaker missing since Tuesday night.
Port Angeles Coast Guard crews were among those searching for Andrew W. Aldrich in North Bay in the vicinity of Case Inlet near Allyn in Mason County.
Aldrich, 31, was last seen at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday. He was in a yellow kayak wearing dark green Carhardt gear and no life jacket.
The Coast Guard was notified of the missing man by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Crews located an empty yellow kayak with a paddle in North Bay at about 9 a.m.
The search was suspended at 2:19 p.m. after crews searched 16 square miles for more than 12 hours covering 170 miles.
In addition to Port Angeles crews, personnel with Station Seattle and the cutter Adelie participated in the search.
The water temperature in the search area was 43 degrees and the air temperature was 30 degrees.
Aldrich reportedly planned to travel only 300 yards to his car from a vessel anchored in North Bay.
