19,119 cans: Clubs collect tuna, funds to benefit Olympic Peninsula food banks

PORT ANGELES — Through contributions of tuna and money between the dates of Feb. 14 to April 2 an equivalent of 19,119 cans of tuna were collected during the 24th annual Community Tuna Drive.

A total of 13,914 cans were collected through the “Tuna Challenge,” a challenge held for various area service clubs.

Awards were delegated to clubs that aggregated the most donations.

The Nor’wester Rotary of Port Angeles took the Gold Tuna Award with 5,473 cans donated.

The Silver Tuna Award went to Port Angeles Rotary with a donation of 5,316 cans.

The Bronze Tuna Award was won by Port Angeles Soroptimists with a donation of 1,426 cans followed by the Jet Set Soroptimists who donated 1,010 cans of tuna and are awarded the special NTL Trophy.

Making up the rest of the service club total were contributions by the Port Angeles Kiwanis, Juan de Fuca Kiwanis, Olympic Kiwanis club and the Port Angeles Lions Club.

More than 4,300 cans of tuna were collected from community businesses, churches, schools, individuals and other groups and organizations.

Highlighting this category was 2,737 cans collected by First Federal in a competition between its branches.

Another notable contribution was 1,415 cans collected by the Port Angeles High School Key Club from faculty and students.

The donations benefited area food banks.
