Clothing swap in Chimacum to help children prepare for school

CHIMACUM — Families can spiff up children’s wardrobes with new-to-them clothes on Saturday at the second annual Clothes Swap.

The swap, sponsored by Olympic Community Action Programs, will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 West Valley Road.

Those who want to donate clothes for the swap can bring them to the center between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. today and Friday.

Those who bring clothes will receive coupons entitling them to equivalent items during the swap.

For instance, a family can get one coupon for each outgrown item taken to the swap, return Saturday, and exchange their coupons for clothing that fits.

Also, clothing can be purchased for $1 each item.

“This is a good way for families to get new clothes for the upcoming school year without spending a lot of money,” said Anne Schneider, a volunteer who is organizing the program.

Schneider expects about 1,000 pieces of clothes to be distributed.

Freshly washed clothes in the lost-and-found departments of the Chimacum and Port Townsend public school districts will join the donations at the swap.

Schneider outlined requirements for donations.

Toddler’s clothes are not accepted, since these sizes change more than once a year.

Clothing donations must be in children’s sizes.

Some adult clothes, such as sweatshirts and sportswear, may pass this test, since teenagers can be as tall as adults. But Schneider stressed that adult clothing must be appropriate for being worn by a high school student.

All donated items must be clean.

“We won’t accept anything that is dirty,” Schneider said.

Clothes left after the swap will be offered for sale in the OlyCAP Thrift Shoppe at 10632 Rhody Drive in Port Hadlock, Schneider said.

Saying children can be fussy about their clothes, Schneider suggests they come along to pick out something they like.

“We have a lot of really nice things on the tables already,” she said.

“There are labels that you will recognize, and some of them still have price tags.”
