PORT ANGELES – Clallam County commissioners are expected today to assume the increased cost of extending a Port Angeles city sewer line eastward to a planned Wal-Mart Supercenter.
In turn, Port Angeles City Council members tonight are expected to waive a surcharge on the monthly bills of customers hooking up to the sewer along the way.
The city also plans to award a bid on the nearly $6 million project – up from the $5 million the county had anticipated – so the sewer can reach the new Wal-Mart site by October.
Wal-Mart plans to build the new store on property formerly housing a Kmart across U.S. Highway 101 from its current location.
“We don’t want to waste any time getting this out to bid,” County Administrator Jim Jones told commissioners at their weekly work session Monday.
The city ordinarily imposes a 150 percent surcharge on the monthly bills for utilities it extends beyond its border into what is called an urban growth area, or UGA.
It will waive the surcharge for the new sewer’s users.
