If the number of application forms taken out of the Clallam County Human Resources Department is any measure, about 50 people are interested in applying for county sheriff.
Marjorie Upham, county director of personnel and risk management, said all 50 printed applications were either requested by phone, e-mail or taken from in front of her office in the county courthouse basement by Monday morning.
“It’s just amazing,” Upham marveled.
County Administrator Dan Engelbertson’s response:
“Oh my God! There’s a lot of people who want to be sheriff!”
County commissioners today are expected to open the application filing period for the interim sheriff’s position, which Sheriff Joe Hawe leaves Oct. 1 after 13 years in office.
Hawe has three years remaining in his fourth term.
The commissioners will accept applications through Friday, and anticipate making a final decision to fill the position at their action meeting Sept. 30.
