Clallam PUD ponders its future with Bonneville

PORT ANGELES — The federal power marketing agency that provides 99 percent of the Clallam County Public Utility District’s electricity could undergo major changes in 2011.

The district’s latest five-year wholesale energy contract with the Bonneville Power Administration — the first following the 2000-2001 energy crisis — also expires in 2006.

Clallam PUD commissioners want to begin studying how these changes could affect the district’s 25,000 electricity customers, and how best to deal with those changes.

A workshop on Clallam PUD’s relationship to Bonneville is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the district’s headquarters, 2431 E. U.S. Highway 101, Port Angeles.

It will be the first of what could be several formal discussions during the coming months.

Looking at all options

“Bonneville will change in 2011, and there’s another rate case in 2006,” said Clallam PUD chairman Will Purser.

“So we want to look at all of our options to see if owning a ‘slice’ of the BPA system would be more advantageous,” he said.

Wednesday’s workshop will start looking at these long-range energy issues, Purser said.

“A consultant will give us their experience with utilities that have taken a slice of the system and what their track record is,” he said.
