PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Public Utility District water customers east of here should have a new water treatment plant on Morse Creek sometime in early 2006.
PUD commissioners awarded the project bid Monday afternoon to Standard Construction Inc. of Mount Vernon for $1.7 million.
PUD board chairman Ted Simpson said the contractor probably will break ground in August on the membrane water treatment plant, which will be designed to handle up to one million gallons a day.
The main concern is getting the site preparation and concrete work done before winter weather sets in, he said.
The project is estimated to take a minimum of 200 calendar days, or more than six months.
Emergency bid award
The commissioners declared an emergency to award the bid since all three bids opened June 29 were more than 15 percent over the engineer’s estimate.
Standard Construction’s low bid was 17.9 percent more than the engineer’s estimate of $1.44 million.
