Clallam public health officer named to state board

OLYMPIA — Gov. Jay Inslee has appointed Clallam County Health Officer Dr. Chris Frank to the 10-member Washington State Board of Health, the board announced this week.

Frank said Tuesday he is excited about the opportunity and is looking forward to representing local jurisdictions on the state board.

The board reviews rule-making on health issues across the state and makes policy recommendations.

“It’s super exciting to be on the ground floor for those policy recommendations that not only affect our region but all parts of the state,” Frank said.

Frank is one of two people recently appointed to the board. Kurt Hilt, a resident and city councilman in Lake Stevens, also was appointed.

Frank said there have been a number of health officers on the board from the region whom he respects, including Dr. Tom Locke, health officer for Jefferson County.

According to a statement issued by the Washington State Board of Health, Frank is an innovative leader who incorporates data and evidence-based practices to reduce inequity, address the social determinants of health and improve population health and wellness in the community.

Frank has extensive experience in addressing the opioid epidemic and made Clallam County the first county in the state to mandate reporting of non-fatal opioid overdoses.

“Dr. Frank and Mr. Hilt bring an important level of experience and expertise to the board,” said Michelle Davis, executive director of the board.

“They share a strong commitment to public service and have significant experience engaging the public on critical public health issues such as opioid abuse and emergency preparedness.

“As community leaders, they are focused on helping protect and improve the public’s health.”
