Clallam panel OKs funds for trucks, work

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County commissioners have approved putting out for bid the purchase of three new dump trucks as well as funds for work on the Hoko-Ozette Road and Palo Alto Road.

The three commissioners took action Tuesday.

A bid process was approved for the purchase of three 10-cubic-yard dump trucks for the county public works department.

The department expects the trucks to cost $150,000 to $200,000 each and specifies Kenworth or equivalent trucks, said Bob Martin, public works administrative director.

They will replace three 30-year-old trucks that have very high miles and a lot of hard use, Martin said.

“They need to be replaced, for safety if no other reasons,” he said.

County commissioners approved the transfer of $47,371 as the county’s portion of the cost for repairs to a 0.16-mile stretch of Clallam Bay’s Hoko Ozette Road near Milepost 3.

The state Department of Transportation is responsible for the remainder of the cost, for a total of $316,774, shared between state and county.

The commissioners also approved the transfer of $42,000 from the county road fund for a matching payment to chip-seal Palo Alto Road, which is off U.S. Highway 101 east of Sequim.

The county’s matching funds will be added to Forest Highway Program funds for a total cost of the project of $265,774.

Palo Alto Road is used for access to national forest land.

Commissioners also approved an amendment to a contract with Richmond 2-Way Radio extending the emergency communications technology contract to Aug. 31.

Richmond is installing new equipment and systems for the Law Enforcement Dispatch Radio Network.
