PORT ANGELES — Clallam County and U.S. Forest Service firefighting officials displayed two new wildfire vehicles outside the county courthouse on Tuesday to show the public how they were prepared for tinder dry conditions in the county’s forests and grasslands.
Fire season started more than a month early this year, Allen Knobbs, county Fire District No. 3 assistant chief for emergency medical services, reported to the commissioners before they approved a $40,000 grant to assist the fire district in improving its wildfire response effectiveness.
The funding, known as Title III, is disbursed from the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture’s office through legislation known as the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self Determination Act of 2000.
The county has received $200,000 through the grant since 2000.
