PORT ANGELES — Clallam County commissioners Tuesday approved Sheriff Joe Hawe’s proposals for a school resource officer and two recreation officers.
But the approval is contingent on Hawe securing an agreement with the state Department of Fish and Wildlife to share in funding and equipment to support the two recreation deputies.
“If we don’t get the Wildlife agreement, then we’re not going to do it,” County Administrator Dan Engelbertson said.
On Monday, Hawe presented an interagency agreement proposed between state Fish and Wildlife and the Sheriff’s Department for the recreation officer positions.
The recreation officers will provide law enforcement along Olympic Discovery Trail, which to date extends 29 miles in Clallam County.
The officers would also operate as boating safety officers, patrolling the county’s waterways.
Other duties include the typical law enforcement duties of a county deputy.
