SEQUIM — Two men were rescued from a 32-foot Bayliner boat that beached on Dungeness Spit, the Clallam County sheriff’s office said Sunday.
The Sheriff’s Office received a call at about 1 a.m. Saturday from the Coast Guard requesting assistance for the boat, the Saratoga Passage.
Coast Guard boats were unable to reach the Bayliner because of a low tide.
Deputy Mark Millet and Sgt. John Hollis responded and were aided by the Dungeness lighthouse keeper and his offroad utility vehicle.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the vessel was found nearly parallel to shore, with breaking surf, causing the boat to violently shift on and off the shoreline.
The operator of the vessel, 80-year-old James Grever and his passenger, David Wilcox, 58, both of Whidbey Island, were taken safely off the vesse, “and the vessel was made secure to the shore until later arrangements could be made,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
The incident is under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office boating unit. Alcohol and drug use are not suspected.
