Clallam County sheriff’s deputies are carrying a new tool on their belts: the Taser X-26.
With the ability to fire two probes into a person from 21 feet away and deliver a disabling five-second zap of electricity, the new Tasers will greatly reduce injuries to both officers and suspects, Sheriff Joe Martin said.
“This is the best product to get the job done,” Martin said.
“It’s the safest product to get the job done.”
The sheriff has purchased 32 Tasers, at a cost of about $25,000 to the department’s equipment reserve fund.
Twenty-six Tasers will go to patrol deputies, five will go to jail deputies, and one will go to detectives, who have also acquired the department’s five older-model Tasers.
By the end of this week, all deputies will be trained to carry the black electric guns on their left hips.
“This is the finest non-lethal weapon available to law enforcement today,” Capt. Steve Snover said.
