PORT ANGELES — Clallam County Commissioner Mike Doherty and shooting park proponents say letting the county’s park board take the lead could be the best shot at making a public range a reality.
Members of the park board have made the proposed range a priority and are pursuing a process that “would be more of a staging for success, rather than have it implode in the 11th hour, as it has done two times before,” Doherty, D-Port Angeles, said Saturday.
His comments came during a regular meeting of the North Olympic Peninsula Phone Tree, the parent group of the Pacific Northwest Shooting Park Association working to establish a world-class public range for firearms, archery, horseback riding and four-wheel driving.
The range has become a possibility again this year after dozens of years of shooters pushing for a park, with some failed attempts when neighbors of proposed locations protested.
With the park board as the lead entity in building a range, problems could be alleviated this time around, Doherty said.
