Clallam County commissioners are expected today to set priorities for economic development projects that cities, other groups and agencies seek.
The wish list is needed if Clallam is to receive funding from a state agency set up to help rural counties — especially in timber areas.
But whether any of the funding comes from the cash-strapped state remains to be seen.
The Clallam County Economic Development Council pushed a countywide team to name 12 projects — many of them in the Forks/West End area — recommended for funding from the Washington State Office of Trade and Economic Development.
The process, originated during the Clinton era in the 1990s, is the outgrowth of programs designed to offset the timber-industry decline on the North Olympic Peninsula and throughout the Northwest.
“We’ve really broadened it out so we can what the priorities really are,” said Jim Haguewood, Clallam Economic Development Council executive director.
“It’s a bottom-up approach.”
