Clallam County commissioners are expected today to narrow down a list of 12 applicants for interim sheriff.
The commissioners meet at 10 a.m. today at the courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., but they will not interview sheriff semifinalists until Friday, County Administrator Dan Engelbertson said.
“It is a public interview process,” Engelbertson said Monday at the commissioners’ afternoon work session.
Sheriff Joe Hawe, who is taking a job in Olympia, resigned last month with three years left on his four-year term.
Hawe’s resignation becomes effective Oct. 1, and the commissioners are expected to name his interim replacement Sept. 30.
The interim sheriff will serve for about 13 months, until voters elect a replacement in November 2004.
Commissioners have indicated that they prefer to appoint a sheriff who agrees not to seek election next year.
