CARLSBORG — The county arson task force was investigating suspicious fires Sunday in two vacant dwellings less than a mile apart on the north side of U.S. Highway 101 near here.
A mobile home was gutted by flames in a fire at 10 Boyce Road that was reported about 10:30 a.m. A stick-built structure seven-tenths of a mile to the west at 259823 Highway 101 was less seriously damaged in a fire called in about 3 p.m.
Al Knobbs, assistant Fire District 3 chief, said the task force’s investigation would determine if the fires were arson, but tentatively termed them “darn suspicious.”
Knobbs said there were many coincidences about the fires.
“They’re a concern for me,” Knobbs said. “It makes me nervous.”
Knobbs said damage to the two dwellings might have been worse if the fires had been started at night. Both of Sunday’s fires were spotted soon after they started, Knobbs said.
“We’re darned lucky they weren’t started at night,” Knobbs said.
