The Clallam County Humane Society could suffer a “substantial blow” to its budget next year if the county cuts animal control.
Humane Society board President Charles Schramm said Friday the shelter could lose one-half to two-thirds of its operating budget if Sheriff Joe Hawe decides to eliminate animal control services from his 2003 budget.
That loss of funding may mean cutting back staffing and could greatly limit the number of animals the shelter can care for, Schramm said.
“We turn no animals away, period,” he said. “But it’s going to possibly have to change, depending on what we can afford to do.
“It’s going to be a substantial blow to the Humane Society.”
Hawe recommended eliminating animal control services last month, saying it would save $227,555 in department expenses and help him balance the department’s $6.3 million budget.
