SEQUIM — Vickie Becker has a full house. But come fall, she could have room for more.
Becker is the family and community partnership coordinator for Head Start and Early Head Start, which means she’s always seeking to spread the word about federally subsidized preschools in Clallam County.
“A lot of people have no clue that there’s a Head Start in Sequim,” said Becker.
But the program at the Community School, 220 W. Alder St., provides activities for 32 children, babies to age 5. It has a staff of nine, plus volunteers.
“It would be wonderful” to have more volunteer help, Becker added.

Like many preschools and child-care providers, Head Start has a waiting list. But Becker urges parents to call and inquire about openings that may come up in September.
As preschoolers become old enough for kindergarten, she said, they graduate from Head Start and leave room for the next wave.
Most of the spaces for Head Start children are for low-income families, said Janet Anderson, director of Clallam County Early Childhood Services.
