Clallam Fire District No. 2 lauds Roark Miller with award

PORT ANGELES — Sheila Roark Miller, Clallam County community development director and fire marshal, has been recognized for spearheading a fire protection ordinance and advocating for partnerships with Fire District No. 2.

Roark Miller received a plaque at the Fire District No. 2 volunteer awards and recognition banquet attended by an estimated 100 people Feb. 26 at the Port Angeles Red Lion Hotel.

The fire protection ordinance was added to the Clallam County code in March 2012 “to safeguard life and property, and to provide standards for fire protection for residential, commercial and industrial developments” within unincorporated areas.

The ordinance, which focused on design and construction standards, codified a longstanding draft policy that had been in place since 1991.

‘Landmark’ legislation

District 2 Fire Chief Sam Phillips said the ordinance was “landmark piece of local legislation that serves as a guidepost for fire protection, including water supply, fire sprinklers, road width and access by fire apparatus, and establishes construction standards for fire separations.”

Roark Miller also went on record to the commissioners this year advocating partnerships with Fire District No. 2 to provide service to residents and businesses in Clallam County, he said.

As the county fire marshal, Roark Miller enforces fire protection and prevention codes, and serves as a point person for local outdoor burning regulations.

Fire District No. 2 provides fire suppression and emergency medical service to 9,500 people in an 85-square-mile area.

Its 40 volunteers and four full-time firefighter/EMTs respond to an average of 1,000 emergency calls per year.
