LAKE CRESCENT — Larger trees were spared by a fire that swept across four acres of Olympic National Park at the east end of Lake Crescent on Saturday.
But about 80 percent of smaller trees — trees six to 10 feet high — and the majority of ground fuels were consumed, the park reported Sunday.
Almost 40 firefighters from the park, Olympic National Forest and the state Department of Natural Resources continued extinguishing and removing burning material on Sunday.
The fire began early Saturday near Pirates Cove at the east end of the lake.
Officials suspect the blaze started from an unattended campfire. Three residences in the area were temporarily evacuated.
Five firefighters will complete the mop-up Monday, a statement from the park said.
Fire danger is currently rated as moderate, and currently campfires are permitted in fire pits in approved areas, unless conditions change.
Fireworks are prohibited in Olympic National Park.
