PORT ANGELES — Family Planning of Clallam County received a grant of $88,201 to help prevent teen-age pregnancies.
The grant from the Washington state Department of Health’s Youth Development Program will support prevention efforts through education and family planning services for teens.
“Teen pregnancy is an issue on the North Olympic Peninsula,” said Cherie Reeves Sperr, assistant director of Family Planning of Clallam County.
“Compared to their peers who have children later, Clallam County teen parents are more likely to have low birth-weight babies, they are less likely to complete their education and meet their economic goals, and are at an increased risk of substance abuse, partner violence and maternal depression.”
The latest data regarding Clallam teen pregnancies were presented in a report by the agency in 1999 which supported the grant application.
