Relatives and fellow officers fly to Washington, D.C., this weekend to honor slain Clallam County Sheriff’s Deputy Wally Davis during a four-day series of events.
“We know it’s going to be emotional and nobody can really prepare us for that, but I think it will be a healing process and hopefully give us some more closure,” Davis’ widow, Lisa, said Thursday night.
Undersheriff Joe Martin will lead the department’s honor guard for performances in the commemoration services.
The drill squad, formed following Davis’ death, has spent the past few months raising about $15,000 to cover trip expenses and special uniforms.
“It’s worth it,” Martin said.
Davis, 48, suffered a fatal shotgun blast to the head on Aug. 5 after answering a disturbance call just east of Port Angeles.
Thomas Martin Roberts, a 54-year-old telephone technician with a history of mental problems and drug abuse, awaits trial on first-degree murder charges.
The National Police Week activities in Washington, D.C., start Sunday with a motorcycle procession to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
