Clallam County landowners who own less than 3.2 acres may be forced to subsidize tax breaks for residents who own more acres and promise to preserve their land as farmland.
County Assessor Linda Owings-Rosenburgh said the county Planning Commission has recommended the tax break under a conservation farming category of the Open Space Land Program.
Commissioners are expected to set June 19 as the public hearing date for the Planning Commission’s tax-shift recommendation.
Owings-Rosenburgh requested changes to a county land program after a staff audit revealed 30 percent of landowners receiving Farm and Agricultural Current Use Assessment tax breaks were not in compliance.
