The public should be involved in discussions regarding what happens to their garbage before decisions on dumps are made, Clallam County commissioners agreed Monday.
The commissioners met with county staffers to discuss the city of Port Angeles’ long-range landfill plan.
The Port Angeles Landfill near Fairchild International Airport is scheduled to close by the end of 2006. It takes virtually all the solid waste in the county.
The city of Port Angeles has proposed building a transfer station at the current dump and hauling the county’s garbage to a regional landfill in Washington or Oregon.
The Clallam County Solid Waste Advisory Committee will review the city’s proposal at its Jan. 17 meeting.
However, the county commissioners don’t want to wait that long to hear what the public thinks.
“We should go to all the major entities early on,” said Commissioner Mike Doherty, D-Port Angeles.
“This is such a fundamental change, I think there should be a chance for the citizens to comment.”
