PORT ANGELES — The state Auditor’s Office, Port Angeles police and the Clallam County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the possible felony theft of more than $1,500 in public funds by a county Treasurer’s Office employee, city, state and Clallam County officials confirmed this afternoon.
The state Auditor’s Office will begin interviewing county employees later this week and will conduct an audit of the Treasurer’s Office beginning later this week, Treasurer Judy Scott said.
“We are taking every prudent precaution to preserve evidence,” Scott said.
She would not comment on how much was missing, the identity of the employee or if anyone on her four-person staff has been suspended, put on administrative leave or otherwise been disciplined as a result of the theft.
“We are keeping everything intact so they can do a good, thorough audit for us,” Scott said.
Port Angeles Police Department and Clallam County Sheriff’s Department detectives have begun a criminal investigation, with the Port Angeles Police Department acting as the lead agency, Police Chief Terry Gallagher said.
“There is money missing,” he said.
