PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office is offering commemorative Special Olympics Torch Run T-shirts to raise money for the annual run to open the June games.

The T-shirts are available in all sizes for $25 each. All funds will go to support the program.

Each year, officers from all agencies on the North Olympic Peninsula participate in running the Special Olympics torch from the Elwha area to Hood Canal in support of the Special Olympics of Washington Games held in June.

This year, the run takes place June 1. Deputies, officers, troopers and rangers will carry the torch and pass it off to Kitsap County law enforcement that evening.

Kitsap officers will take the torch to Pierce County. The final leg is to Joint Base Lewis McChord on Friday, June 3, where the games are scheduled to begin Saturday, June 4.

Plans for run

During the run, Clallam County Commissioner Mike Chapman hopes to lead a group of walkers with the torch from the Port Angeles City Pier to the Rayonier mill site, said Undersheriff Ron Cameron of the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.

Police Chief Sam White of the Port Gamble tribe is working with the tribe’s canoe family to arrange to paddle the torch across the Hood Canal, Cameron said.

A walking section is set aside near Sequim for those who want to participate.

Among the agencies that will participate are the National Park Service, Clallam Bay Corrections Center, State Patrol, Clallam and Jefferson sheriff’s offices, Border Patrol and Port Angeles, Sequim and Port Townsend police departments.

To buy a T-shirt, contact Cameron at 360-417-2570 or stop by the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office at 223 E. Fourth St., Suite 12.
