PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office Chain Gang cleaned and shined CG-4 in preparation for the Lavender Festival during the week of July 15-19.
Crew members assisted the county Roads Division by brushing and chipping on Mount Angeles and Ranger roads.
Crew members also weeded with Jennifer Chenoweth at 3 Crabs berm and at the Deer Park Rest Area.
During the week of July 22-29, crew members picked up 320 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Elwha River Road, 100 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite at the Deer Park Rest Area, 300 pounds of litter from three illegal dumpsites on Little River Road and 840 pounds of litter from an illegal dumpsite on Deer Park Road.
Notable items found include five mattresses, an office chair, a cat scratching post, a metal bucket, a couch, some carpeting and several plastic garbage can lids.
Crew members assisted the Roads Division by felling trees and brushing Lake Aldwell Road, then chipping the debris.
Crew members trimmed weeds along 9,691 feet of guardrails along Hoko-Ozette and Snider roads.
Crew members also removed three dangerous trees and chipped the debris from Dry Creek Road.
During the week of July 29 to Aug. 1, a shake down was conducted in R tank, two inmates were fired from the chain gang.
Crew members assisted the Roads Division by trimming weeds along 14,102 feet of guardrails along Bogachiel Way and Deer Park, Monroe, Undie, Whitcomb-Dimmel, Mary Clark, Quileute, Mani Smith, Pavel, Maxfield and Piedmont roads.
Crew members also picked up litter and trimmed weeds at the Elwha Kiosk.
The only notable item found during the week was a dead deer.
So far this year the chain gang has cleaned 143 miles of roadway, picked up 7,790 pounds of roadside litter, picked up 142,330 pounds of illegal dumpsite litter, trimmed 89,375 feet of guardrail and pulled or sprayed approximately 31,580 Scotch broom plants.
For the forest service, the chain gang has so far this year cleaned 11.1 miles of forest service roads or trails.
