PORT ANGELES — A heavily armored, tank-like vehicle rumbled down Fourth Street on Monday and stopped in front of the Clallam County Courthouse.
As the dark colored vehicle made its way, a crowd of about 30 people gathered for a glimpse.
The armored personnel carrier, “Peacekeeper,” is the newest piece of equipment in the Clallam County Sheriff’s Department arsenal to combat crime.
Monday’s rollout marked the commissioning of the armored vehicle Sheriff Joe Hawe says has been needed by law enforcement officials here for at least two years.
“The purpose of this is to save lives,” Hawe said during the 10 a.m. commissioning ceremony. “It will help us if there is a riot at the prison, a standoff, a hostage situation or if there are officers down.”
The armored personnel carrier will be available to all law enforcement agencies on the North Olympic Peninsula, he said.
