Clallam County returns nearly 11 percent of primary election ballots

Nearly 11 percent of ballots had been returned by Tuesday in Clallam County for the Aug. 16 primary election.

Out of 19,102 ballots mailed last Wednesday, 2,058 — or 10.8 percent — had been returned, the Clallam County Auditor’s Office reported Tuesday.

In Jefferson County, 16.9 percent, or 3,705 ballots, had been returned by Tuesday out of 21,819 ballots, said Betty Johnson, voter registration coordinator, on Tuesday.

The Clallam County primary is being held only in Commissioner District No. 1 and involves less a little less than half of the voters in the county.

Only one contest will be narrowed in the top-two primary: the race for Sequim Mayor Pro Tem Laura Dubois’s seat in which the incumbent is challenged by Ron Fairclough and John Miller.

The top two vote-getters in the primary will advance to the Nov. 8 general election.

In addition to the Sequim race on the Clallam County primary ballot, voters in District 1 will vote on the race between Sequim Democrat Linda Barnfather and Sequim Republican Jim McEntire for the Clallam County commissioner’s seat now held by Steve Tharinger, who did not run for re-election.

That race also will be on the general election ballot and be voted on by all voters in the county.

Any voter in the area east of McDonald Creek who has not received a ballot by now should call voter registrar Julie Ridgway for a replacement ballot and address verification.
