Clallam County commissioners have not yet decided how they will appoint an interim sheriff, or even who is in the running, but phone calls of support for potential candidates are already pouring in.
“Are we getting (calls)?” County Administrator Dan Engelbertson said Thursday and laughed. “Yes, we are.”
The commissioners’ office is keeping a tally of who is calling and which candidates they are supporting, he said.
Sheriff Joe Hawe announced two weeks ago that he will retire from the post Oct. 1, leaving the position open for an appointed interim sheriff until an election can be held in November 2004 for the remaining two years of the term.
On Monday, the commissioners will discuss qualifications for the position, the process of accepting applications and the timeline for selecting and appointing an interim sheriff.
