PORT ANGELES — Mail carriers across Clallam County will find their loads a little heavier today after 39,447 ballots are sent out this morning to the county’s registered voters for the Sept. 17 primary election. There is no poll voting.
Elections Supervisor Patty Rosand said ballots must be postmarked by midnight Sept. 17.
Ballots may also be returned to the auditor’s office in the county courthouse at 223 E. Fourth St., a drop-box on the circular driveway at the front of the courthouse, to Forks District Court or the vehicle licensing office in Sequim.
Rosand said registered voters not receiving ballots by Sept. 3 should call 360-417-2221.
Voters will decide the fate of two taxing proposals and trim the field in the election of a Public Utility District commissioner from the central part of the county.
All but one of the other offices up for election appear on the ballot, but have no bearing in the Nov. 5 general election.
Sales tax increase
The only countywide decision on the primary ballot is a proposal to add 0.1 percent to the sales tax to provide funding for jails and juvenile detention facilities in the wake of state spending cuts.
If approved, the county and its three incorporated cities will split the expected revenue of about $726,000 annually. The issue needs a 60 percent plurality to be approved.
