PORT ANGELES — A Clallam County jail inmate who strangled himself in his cell May 18 was taken off life support and pronounced dead Sunday, the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday.
Andrew Staritzky, 39, of Port Angeles was listed in critical but stable condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle hours after he was found unresponsive and without a pulse at 5:39 a.m. five days before he died, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Jail staff found Staritzky when they responded to shouts from other inmates.
They administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Medics arrived five minutes later. They continued CPR, and a pulse was found.
Staritzky was taken to Olympic Medical Center before being transferred to Harborview.
An investigation is under way by the Port Angeles Police Department and the Major Incident Response Team, which both the police and the Sheriff’s Office participate in.
Investigators are awaiting autopsy results, and once the results are released, the case will be forwarded to the Sheriff’s Office.
Staritzky was booked into jail May 7 for investigation of harassment and making threats to kill, the Sheriff’s Office said.
