Most Clallam County voters aren’t speaking. They’re snoring.
Roughly 34 percent of Clallam County voters had returned their ballots as of Monday – 15,106 out of nearly 43,995 – according to Auditor Patty Rosand.
More than 2,550 ballots arrived Monday, the biggest daily return so far.
They put Clallam about midrange among Washington’s 39 counties, she said.
Auditors around the state had exchanged e-mails Monday, and voting ranged from 20 percent to 45 percent, Rosand said.
Jefferson County Auditor Donna Eldridge said Monday that her county has posted a 39.09 percent return so far. Three weeks ago, Eldridge had predicted a 63 percent turnout.
If this lackluster trend holds true through 8 p.m. today, it will fall far below Secretary of State Sam Reed’s prediction of a 51 percent rate of return statewide.
“It’s an odd-year election,” Rosand said of the ballot that offers neither nationwide contests nor campaigns for state office.
