PORT ANGELES – Two, four, six, eight: How many junk cars must you abate?
An ordinance Clallam County commissioners are considering would outlaw a single inoperable or badly damaged vehicle on anyone’s property.
Commissioners, though, may loosen the limit after they hold a public hearing on the law next month.
The long-sought ordinance had its debute Monday at the commissioners’ weekly work session.
It sets $100-per-day penalties – double the current fine – for creating a public nuisance.
It also makes violating the law a misdemeanor punishable by a fine up to $1,000 and/or as long as 90 days in jail.
Commissioners focused on the section of the ordinance that redefines a violation from three junk vehicles to one.
“The code compliance team is highly in favor of it,” said Selinda Barkhuis, senior planner with the county Department of Community Development, who drafted the measure.
That team includes Rich Sill, former county undersheriff, and Tony Polizzi, a former Port Townsend police officer.
