PORT ANGELES — Clallam County commissioners today will consider awarding a $112,314 contract to Aldergrove Construction to remodel the interior of the Clallam County Veterans Center.
The facility at 216 S. Francis St. will get new flooring, lighting, paint, kitchen cabinets and appliances, according to county Parks, Fair and Facilities Manager Joel Winborn.
“The inside’s going to be totally gutted and redone,” Winborn told commissioners in their Monday work session.
“It’s going to be very nice.”
Aldergrove Construction, a Port Angeles company, had the lowest of four bids that commissioners opened in a public meeting last Tuesday.
A fifth bid that came in late was sent back unopened.
“We had great response,” Winborn said.
“I was real happy to see that, and even happier to see that the low bid was well below our estimate.”
The department’s estimate was $150,000.
The two-month project will commence after Veterans Day ceremonies Tuesday, Nov. 11, Winborn said.
During the remodel, veterans groups will meet in the Clallam County courthouse, county Veterans Coordinator Tammy Sullenger said.
In other discussions, commissioners endorsed a $20,000 grant application to fund a suicide-prevention program on the county’s West End.
The grant from the Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery would establish suicide prevention and intervention education in Forks, county Health and Human Services Director Iva Burks said.
“It’s specific to Forks because the Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery determined Forks is the highest risk community in Clallam County,” Prevention Specialist Leeann Grasseth told commissioners.
“Originally, when the coalition in Forks determined what their highest need was, suicide came up as one of the issues.”
If the funding is approved, the county would be responsible for a 20 percent match.
