Clallam County commissioners have approved a policy establishing medical benefit criteria for employees called up for active military service.
Commissioners voted 2-0 Tuesday to approve the policy extending health care insurance for up to 6 months for employees called to serve, County Administrator Dan Engelbertson said.
Commissioner Mike Chapman, R-Port Angeles, was absent from the meeting.
Employees will not otherwise be paid by the county while serving in the military, he said.
The policy became an issue after Sheriff Joe Hawe, who was recently activated for duty with the U.S. Coast Guard, requested a salary differential payment.
