Clallam calls for bids for Old Olympic Highway improvements

PORT ANGELES — Clallam County has called for bids for improvements to Old Olympic Highway northwest of Sequim.

The federally funded paving and overlay project will affect a 2-mile section of the county road between the Dungeness River bridge and Mariott Avenue.

The work includes a hot-mix asphalt overlay, pavement rehabilitation and paint striping.

“We expect the contractor to begin work the second or third week in October,” County Engineer Ross Tyler wrote in a Wednesday email.

“The contract is for 15 working days, which will put completion near the end of October. The contractor may choose to shorten up that time line a bit to better fit their scheduling.”

Various funding

The project will be covered with up to $859,723 in federal funds and about $134,000 from the county road fund, Tyler wrote in a memo to the board.

Contractors have until Sept. 9 to submit a bid.

Drivers can expect short delays while the road is being improved.

No road closures requiring detour routes are planned.

“The contractor will use flaggers, and may also use pilot cars,” Tyler said.

“Alternating traffic should be expected.”

Clallam County has been paving and widening other sections of Old Olympic Highway west of the Dungeness River in recent years.

In other news from Tuesday’s board meeting, commissioners approved an interagency agreement with Washington State University for a low-ropes challenge course for Port Angeles-area youths.

The portable ropes course is funded by a federal Drug-Free Communities grant awarded to the Port Angeles Healthy Youth Coalition.
