Clallam Bay inmate suspected in prison officer stabbing transferred

CLALLAM BAY — An inmate who reportedly stabbed a Clallam Bay Corrections Center officer in the face and neck has been transferred to a prison in Aberdeen while Clallam Bay staff continues to investigate the assault.

Carlos Avalos, 19, was listed as an inmate at the 1,936-inmate Stafford Creek Corrections Center in Aberdeen as of Saturday, according to the Department of Corrections website.

Avalos reportedly stabbed an unidentified male corrections officer at the 850-inmate Clallam Bay prison at about 10 a.m. Feb. 3 with what has been described as a pointed object, according to Corrections.

The assault sent the officer to Olympic Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries and triggered a lockdown, in which inmates are confined to their cells, that had lasted the better part of a week.

The corrections officer was discharged from the hospital not long after the assault.

Department of Corrections spokeswoman Norah West said the investigation into the assault continues.

Ron Cameron, chief criminal deputy with the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, said Friday that his deputies’ part in the investigation is all but done, adding that they’re waiting on witness interview reports from Clallam Bay corrections officers.

Visitations to resume

West said visitations at Clallam Bay are slated to resume this weekend after the lockdown was lifted earlier this week.

Inmates are still on restricted movement, West said, meaning that not all privileges have been returned.

“The goal is to slowly and steadily decrease restrictions as the facility returns to normal operations,” West said in an email Friday.

Avalos is serving a 10-year sentence for attacking a teacher with a homemade knife and hitting a security officer at a corrections vocational school in Chehalis in June 2012.
