Clallam authorities looking for missing teenager near Port Angeles

Official: 18-year-old male might be confused over his whereabouts

PORT ANGELES — Authorities were looking Monday for a missing 18-year-old male who is schizophrenic and went missing at about 1 a.m. in the Mount Pleasant Road area east of Port Angeles.

Nicholas James Gaylord might be confused over his whereabouts, Clallam County Sheriff’s Sgt. John Keegan said in a press release.

Gaylord left his parents’ home in the 500 block of Henry Boyd Road, Keegan said.

Keegan said late Monday afternoon that a ground search for Gaylord would resume Monday evening and that authorities were hoping to obtain help from the U.S. Border Patrol.

Gaylord went missing about a half-mile east of Mount Pleasant Road in a wooded, residential area with ravines and a small stream that separates the area from the Deer Park area, Keegan said in an interview.

Gaylord is 6 feet tall, weighs about 150 pounds, has brown eyes and short brown hair, and is clean shaven, Keegan said.

Gaylord was last seen wearing checkered pajama pants, a burgundy T-shirt and brown boots or shoes.

The temperature was a low of 46 degrees and a high of 53 degrees from midnight to 6 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

The forecast for Monday predicted a low of 48 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Deputies were alerted that Gaylord was missing after they responded to a prowler complaint in the area of Gaylord’s residence, Keegan said.

A male matching his description was reported knocking on a neighbor’s door and trying to enter another neighbor’s residence through the back door.

He was chased off by one of the homeowners, Keegan said.

Gaylord’s father, contacted by deputies in the area, told them he was looking for his son and said he went missing about 50 minutes earlier.

His father said his son “is schizophrenic and more than likely confused about whose house he was trying to enter,” Keegan said.

A search of the area was conducted early Monday morning and after sunrise.

Anyone with information about Gaylord’s location should call the Sheriff’s Office at 360-417-2459.
