PORT ANGELES — Incumbent Clallam County Auditor Cathleen McKeown has misrepresented her professional credentials to the public for the past 15 years.
But McKeown says she believed she had the proper license and isn’t intentionally misleading the public.
The county auditor’s position has no requirements concerning education or state licensing.
The information about McKeown’s certified public accountant status was discovered Monday when the Peninsula Daily News searched the state Board of Accountancy Internet Web site for information on her election opponent Andy Peake of Carlsborg.
Peake was listed as being a certified public accountant, but McKeown was not.
Cheryl Sexton, special assistant to the state Board of Accountancy, confirmed Tuesday that McKeown has never been a certified public accountant.
The board is the licensing agency for certified public accountants.
