PORT TOWNSEND — The city and the school district may soon come to terms on a deal that would put the Mountain View Elementary campus under city control.
On Monday night, the Port Townsend council gave City Manager David Timmons authorization to discuss the potential of a lease agreement where the city would operate the Mountain View campus, which will be vacated by the school district at the end of this school year.
In March, the Port Townsend School Board authorized Superintendent Tom Opstad to engage in talks with interested parties about a possible lease agreement.
Timmons said if the city were to lease the location the assets of the campus — including Jefferson County’s only pool — would remain a public asset.
“This is simply a request to authorize discussions,” Timmons said.
“We want to discuss how it could be used by the city in order to retain the location as a public asset.”
Timmons said the campus could serve many uses, including the relocation of the city police headquarters.
“We aren’t committing to anything yet,” Timmons said.
“We want to see if we can come up with a mutual package to present to the council and School Board in the near future.”
