PORT ANGELES — A chimney fire that reignited after initially being doused by a resident damaged a 10th Street home Friday morning.
Lt. Kevin Denton of the Port Angeles Fire Department said firefighters received the call at 9:39 a.m. for a fire at 808 E. 10th St.
With smoke showing from the eaves and roof vents of the single-story house, firefighters discovered a fire in the wall above the home’s fireplace.
They opened up the interior wall and ceiling above the fireplace and extinguished a fire that Denton said extended into the attic.
The fire was contained to the area around and above the fireplace, said Denton, but there was smoke throughout the home.
No one was home at the time. No injuries were reported, and fire officials said they were unsure the occupants will be staying in the home.
Fire officials said a neighbor had earlier alerted a resident of the home that embers were coming from the chimney. The resident left for work after dousing the chimney embers with a garden hose, and the fire reignited while the resident wasn’t home.
Denton said the fire appeared to have extended into the house structure after creosote within the unlined chimney ignited.
There is no cost estimate for damage to the structure or its contents.
Mutual aid was provided by Clallam County Fire District No. 2, which stood by at the Port Angeles station with an engine and three personnel.
A total of 11 fire personnel responded to the scene.
